Do you own a van or pick-up?
Do you tow a trailer?
If so, you may be falling foul of tachograph legislation as your gross train weight (the maximum laden weight of both the vehicle and trailer) may exceed 3.5 tons. In which case you must use a tachograph to record drivers’ hours etc.

Whilst many of you claim tachograph exemption (as you do not use your vehicles for hire or reward), are you aware of a potential issue with digital tachographs?
These are generally fitted to vehicles built from 2005 onwards, some types of tachograph use a back-up battery which preserves the information in the event of the main power supply being interrupted (by removal of the vehicle batteries, using an isolator switch or just simply if the main vehicle batteries go flat).
During bi-annual tachograph calibrations (which are a legal requirement for all ‘working’ trucks), this back-up battery is replaced. As horseboxes do not need these periodic calibrations, it is likely that the back-up battery has never been changed.
